You have to bleach it first and then add the pink dye. It is best to have at least the bleaching professionally done, but I'm cheap so when I did it I did it myself. It was fairly easy, but I have medium brown hair so I didn't need to leave the bleach on very long. I used the bleaching kit by manic panic and it was really easy, it comes with everything you need in it (i think its called flash lightening, or something like that, it will be by the pink dye at Sally's in a black box)
As far as the pink dye, I would recommend manic panic. Its a good brand and you can get it at Sally's Beauty Supply. I've used hot hot pink and red passion (it comes out pink despite the fact that it says red) and both looked really good. I think I actually prefer the red passion because it has less of a purple tone than the hot hot pink did. You can go to the manic panic website and browse around, they have pictures of peoples result with each color. as far as how long it last, the pink will stay in my hair for about a week and a half, but I do things that take the color out, like washing it everyday and using a straightener. The hair underneath that doesn't get the wrath of my straightener stays bright pink but the ends fade.

For about $10 bucks buy powder Bleach, developer ( i use the the 40 creme), and application brush, than buy the pink permanant hair dye sold in clear containers with a black round top I believe. I dyed pink streaks in my hair came out great and bright. But I didn't use any type of color treaded shampoo and it faded quickly... but it looked great - I have dark brown hair by the way. It's safe for your hair (won't damage it at all). You may need to use it more than once, though, depending on how much it lifts the first time. (It only costs $10 for each, so, if you need to do it twice, its still alot cheaper than a salon).
I used this stuff on my hair several times %26amp; my hair is not damaged at all, so, you don't have to worry about that ( it doesn't contain bleach, so, it's not harmful)
After you remove the color (either all over if you want to do an all over pink, or, in the sections/streaks that you want to have it). Make sure you dry your hair completely %26amp; then you can color it the pink right away ( you don't need to wait)
