If there isn't anything there, and he doesn't seem to be sore.. I would lean towards a food allergy.. You feed him a dogfood that contains corn or wheat?

If he bites his nails it's cause you aren't cutting them often enough. Keep them short for him so he is more comfortable.. It hurts their feet to have nails that are too long.

I dont know whats going on but I do know that both of my St.Bernards I had growing up did the same thing.

The enzymes in dogs saliva will do that. No need to worry. He'll be fine! My pequinese did it for 14 years. My shih tzu does too. It has to do with the good bacteria and enzyme activity in thier bodies and it stains the fur.

Foot chewing is a classic sign of food allergies. You need to switch him to a high quality food. Look for something with no corn, wheat, or soy. Try picking a food with a different meat source than the one you're using- usually lamb, duck, fish, bison, and other 'game' meats have less allergic reactions than chicken or beef products. It can take up to a few months to notice the changes when you switch foods, so give it lots of time.

The best brand I can suggest for this particular issue is California Natural Herring %26amp; Sweet Potato formula. Good nutrition, and 99.9% sure not to cause allergies.

He might have a sore on his foot, or he has fleas. If you are really concerned, take him to a vet. Better to be safe then sorry.
